Jim Breese

Founder & Editor-in-Chief

Jim Breese is a data-driven marketing leader and serial entrepreneur with over 15 years of experience building digital products, including educational content platforms. A Michigan State University graduate, Jim has spent his career at the intersection of technology and learning. With FluentFlash, he combined his background in educational content with the latest advances in spaced repetition research to create the study platform he wished existed.

Our Mission

Learning effectively is one of the highest-leverage skills a person can have. Yet the tools most people use (re-reading, highlighting, cramming the night before) are demonstrably among the worst study methods according to cognitive science research (Karpicke & Roediger, 2008; Bjork & Bjork, 2011). We built FluentFlash to make evidence-based learning accessible to everyone.

What Makes FluentFlash Different

FSRS Algorithm

The Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler (FSRS v6) models your individual forgetting curve. Peer-reviewed research shows it is roughly 30% more efficient than the SM-2 algorithm used by Anki.

AI Card Generation

Paste notes, enter a topic, upload a PDF, or share a YouTube URL. FluentFlash generates quality flashcards in seconds. You review and edit before saving.

4,200+ Study Resources

Comprehensive materials covering 42 languages, 100+ standardized exams, 1,000+ academic subjects, and 900+ study guides. All with cited sources and expert review.

8 Quiz Modes

Multiple choice, matching, speed quiz, practice tests, typing, unscramble. Varied retrieval practice strengthens recall through different pathways.

The Science

Spaced Repetition

Studied since Ebbinghaus described the forgetting curve in 1885. Distributing practice over time produces dramatically better long-term retention than massed study.

FSRS Algorithm

The latest evolution of spaced repetition research. Uses optimization techniques to schedule reviews at mathematically optimal intervals for each individual learner.

Active Recall

Testing yourself with flashcards strengthens neural pathways far more effectively than re-reading. Research shows 80% retention vs 36% for passive review.

Giving Back

Jim is committed to education beyond FluentFlash. He has volunteered with Wells Bring Hope (2013-2020) and Boys & Girls Clubs of America (2010-2013), organizations focused on education and opportunity for underserved communities.
